What is servant Leadership?
Servant leadership is actually a leadership philosophy where the main purpose of the leader is for the benefit of the group. Whereas, in traditional leadership the leader’s primary focus is on the flourishing of the organization or business, in servant leadership the leader’s concern is with the well-being of his team or followers. If we can relate this to our everyday lives then it should make sense to use this concept as part of your leadership style. When we are faced with obstacles or having personal problems that keep us from progressing in our chosen field of endeavor then we can turn to someone whom we can depend on to get the job done right.
servant leadership is also an effective way to deal with change because it encourages creativity and flexibility instead of rigidity and reaction. It brings about an environment that fosters growth and development instead of one where individuals feel trapped and continue to do what they have always done. It provides an atmosphere where people are able to think outside the box in order to find solutions that will ultimately create a better environment for everyone involved. As a result the individual who has developed this type of behavior and attitude will find that he is able to impact the team or the organization in a positive and creative manner, ultimately creating a thriving caring world. It also has been proven that those individuals who display traits such as compassion, flexibility, creativity will have an edge over those who are strictly functional, linear, and afraid.
Many individuals who are looking to make a change at their current company have come to realize that the old adage that you need a plan to have a successful plan does not apply in the case of becoming the manager or head of a team. In fact, all you need is a simple plan and the ability to follow through with it. A simple plan for a successful and caring leadership style would be to begin by listening to your team members and taking into consideration their suggestions. You might want to look at some books about servant leadership in order to gain a better understanding and perhaps take some courses to better educate yourself on the subject.
