Drug rehab is a combination of treatment, diagnosis, counseling, and therapy which is designed to find, recognize, and successfully treat emotional addiction to illegal substances (drugged-water) through professional care. The various types of rehabs are: outpatient – In this mode of rehab, the patient resides in the facility and goes through a strict medication-and-counseling schedule for a set period, usually fourteen days. The outpatient structure is advantageous because it allows the patient to maintain regular activities and continue with his/her daily responsibilities outside the rehab.
Inpatient – This mode of drug rehabilitation centers aims at providing an intensive outpatient care with support services to help the addict return to a normal life. Although the term “inpatient” implies that the addict will be staying in the facility, he/she may go out for consultation and or treatment outside the premises. An inpatient may have a relapse prevention program that can be utilized as a tool to avoid future relapses. Outpatient facilities offer a more individualized program to help individuals cope with withdrawal symptoms.
Stepfamilies are a special category of addicts in recovery programs. Their member must be treated separately from the family. The addicted individual will often abuse prescribed drugs or street drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, heroin, etc. The stepfamily member needs more intensive therapeutic attention. Also, they should be screened for alcohol or drug use before admission to the rehab.
Inpatient care is provided for different types of patients. For example, there are inpatient detoxification units, residential treatment facilities, outpatient facilities, day treatment programs, and short-term residential programs. Before admission into a particular rehab, medical histories are investigated to evaluate the medical condition and current medications and therapies being used. Psychological problems should also be evaluated. The duration of stay can be based on the severity of the addiction, age and other factors affecting the physical and mental state of the person.
In outpatient care, the patient attends a specific treatment program for a specified period of time. Family members are told of the patient’s condition and are counseled regarding the withdrawal process. The outpatient services can be provided by physicians, nurses, therapists, etc. However, some drug addicts prefer self-treatment programs to achieve a clean slate and start afresh. The outpatient services can be offered in homes, clinics, hospitals, halfway houses, treatment centers, halfway programs, group homes, treatment centers, day treatment programs, and so on.
Alcohol rehabilitation facilities are for adults, while drug rehab facilities are for teens and children. The outpatient nature of the programs makes it possible for family members to attend to their respective loved ones. The rehab center offers individualized treatment according to the requirements of the patient. It may have a medical doctor as well as a psychotherapist for treatment.
Detoxification, stabilization, and restoration procedures are performed in inpatient rehab. In inpatient rehab, medication is administered intravenously and patients remain in the hospital under observation. The cost of inpatient treatment varies depending upon the severity of the addict’s case. Some common costs include: counseling, medication, therapy sessions, private psychotherapy, family psychotherapy, and housekeeping.
Outpatient treatment can take place in a group therapy setting or an outpatient clinic. Group therapy requires the presence of at least two people. Group counseling helps individuals to work with others on various issues and helps them to overcome addiction. Medication is given in group therapy sessions, which teach the patient ways of controlling his urge to use drugs. However, in group therapy, group dynamics helps a lot in the sense that there is an element of accountability. Some other forms of treatment include behavioral therapy and individual and group counseling.
